Conservation Specialist--Teen Programs 2 positions
• The Teen Conservation Specialist Full Time position works with the Education
Programs management team and staff to develop, deliver, assess, and evaluate
the Teen Conservation Corps program. The Teen Conservation Corps program includes
after school and summer programs for high school aged students. The program integrates
local environmental issues and concepts, supports students as they develop and
carry out locally focused action projects and fosters youth development.
Essential Functions
• With Education Programs staff, teens, and community partners, design, coordinate,
implement and sustain a cohesive and comprehensive program for high school students
that:
• Engages them in positive skill-building experiences and hands-on projects to
build leadership skills, self-esteem, decision-making, and social skills.
• Integrates conservation action and provides community service opportunities.
• Utilizes program delivery and teaching methods appropriate to diverse audiences.
• Is built on current research and best practice methods for adolescent programming.
• With Education Programs management team, develop and implement communication,
planning, and project management processes to ensure the effective coordination
and integration of the programs and resources.
• With Community Partnerships team, cultivate relationships among local schools,
businesses, community youth and education programs and community leaders to enhance
the development of the Teen Conservation Corps.
• Facilitate volunteer development through recruitment, selection, and training
of adult mentors who will support programs and activities.
• Prepare and present verbal and written reports to aquarium staff, community groups,
and others.
• Assist in the design of and maintain processes for monitoring student and program
evaluation.
Typical Physical Demands:
• Work under field conditions: hike, conduct restoration projects, collect stream
data, etc.
• Carry artifacts and equipment during programs and in the field.
• Be able to speak clearly and be heard above background noise over water, in the
field, and labs.
• Be able to respond to audience questions during programs.
• Safely and efficiently operate the office equipment listed below.
1.4 Required Knowledge/Experience
• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in youth development or other related field;
Masters
Degree preferred.
• Broad knowledge of the principles, practices, and current trends in youth development,
issues, and instruction.
• Three to five years of direct experience working with high school aged students,
with previous supervisory and program design experience strongly preferred.
• Experience in fostering a team approach to youth development and creating collaborative
and effective working relationships among partner organizations, teens, staff,
and volunteers.
• Strong conflict resolution skills.
• Highly positive and enthusiastic leadership skills capable of motivating others,
building an effective team, and empowering youth.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide
range of constituencies in a diverse, multicultural community.
• Demonstrated understanding of cultural and social diversity and how it is pertinent
to working with youth and their families.
• Awareness of community resources, and the ability to build, cultivate, and sustain
relationships with these resources.
• Experience recruiting and training volunteers.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent project management and planning skills including organizational and
time management, delegation, and follow-up skills.
• Skills in monitoring program results and demonstrating outcomes both qualitatively
and quantitatively.
• A high degree of versatility and ability to prioritize and coordinate a variety
of competing priorities concurrently and meet deadlines.
• Must be willing to work flexible hours including evening and weekends and be
able to work with minimum supervision.
• Valid California Driver's License.
• The successful candidate will be asked to complete a fingerprint criminal background
check.
Desirable:
• Fluency in Spanish.
• Natural history interpretation skills in exhibit and field settings.
