About Sobrato Center
for Nonprofits
Philosophy
Local nonprofits are the essential delivery system for our Foundation realizing
its mission of helping create and sustain a vibrant and healthy community where
all Silicon Valley residents have equal opportunity to live, work and be enriched.
It is our Foundation’s goal to achieve maximum impact by responding to
nonprofits agencies greatest needs.
Community Problem
Finding and retaining affordable and stable quality office and workspace for
nonprofits in Silicon Valley where office rents are among the highest in the
nation.
Our Philanthropic Response
The Sobrato family leveraged its greatest asset — not money, but real-estate — by
donating two of its office business parks and converting them into two of the
region’s only Multi-Tenant Nonprofit Centers now referred to as the Sobrato
Center for Nonprofits Milpitas and Sobrato Center for Nonprofits San Jose.
Community Impact
As of November 2008, a community of 42 nonprofit organizations are co-located
on two campuses in Milpitas as well as San Jose occupying approximately 185,000
square feet of rent free office space. Each tenant receives free in-kind rent
enabling dollars traditionally spent by these nonprofits on overhead expenses
to be re-directed to important community programs and services. In total, the
value of rent-free space being donated by the Sobrato Foundation is approximately
$3.2 million annually.
This generous donation not only supports the various missions and client beneficiaries
of these tenant organizations, it also offers them a stable work environment
that is of tremendous value (and non-quantifiable) given the real estate market
climate in Silicon Valley. www.sobrato.org
About SJB Child Development
Centers
Building
Better Tomorrows... Today.
The mission of SJB Child Development Centers is to Provide educational child
care for children 0 to 12 years of age to strengthen and support families throughout
Santa Clara County.
Our mission stems from the vision of our organization's founders. Mr. Bill
Williams, our former executive director, had a desire to help parents establish
financial independence by creating a safe place where they could bring their
children while they worked. He also set out to break the cycle of poverty by
offering education-based child care so that the children at his center would
have access to the same opportunities as those from more affluent families. San
Juan Bautista Child Development Center was established with these goals in
mind and quickly made a name for itself by being the first in Santa Clara County
to offer toddler care and before and after school care.
Today, SJB Child Development Centers is synonymous with excellence in child
care and is the only provider in the county to hold all four licenses from California's
Department of Social Services/Community Care Licensing (DSS/CCL) for Infant Care,
Preschool and Extended Day Care. 95% of our clients are very low to moderate
income and are served through 26 programs at 11 sites, all working to uphold
Mr. Williams' vision of Building Better Tomorrows for Children and Families Today.
